The Ajar Autonomous Republic possesses a rather significant industrial potential. Oil processing, electromechanics, shipbuilding and machine building plants, sewing factories, factories processing tobacco, tea, tung and fruits, factories producing canned food, operate effectively.

«Agordzineba-M» – complex building plant with modern machinery is functioning successfully. Motorboats produced by the plant «Agorzineba-N» are also in great demand.

Production of the Batumi industrial plants has been highly estimated at international expositions and fairs.

A land with such a variety of growing cultures as in Ajara can rarely be found. Cultures from every geographical area of Earth excluding arctic and desert cultures can be grown in this naturally rich region.

In spite of the fact that very steep and excessively ragged mountain slopes restrict the store of useful land, there is a possibility of improving its productivity.

The percentage of cultivated, especially arable land, in the overall land store is rather low (16,3%). As far as the territories planted with perennial cultures are concerned, Ajara has the highest percentage of them in Georgia. They occupy 60% of the cultivated land. Ajara specializes in subtropical cultures: tea, citrus fruits and also tobacco, fruit growing and grape growing.

In 1990, tea plantations occupied 8100 hectares (11,4% of the territory planted with tea in Georgia). Here Chinese and Indochina Sorts are basically spread out. High quality Georgian tea of hybrid origin yielding large crops has been selected and cultivated as well.

Citrus growing as well as tea growing was the leading branch of agriculture. The territory planted with citrus fruits occupied 7500 hectares. Annually Ajara yielded 60-65% of citrus fruits grown in Georgia. In the development of the citrus branch great importance is paid to tinned-fruit production. Certain steps have been taken in that direction. Joint ventures equipped with the latest technologies of tea packing (Chinese joint venture), fruit juice bottling (Dutch joint venture), sorting out and labeling citrus fruits (joint venture with Israel), dried fruit production (Italian joint venture) have been founded.

Subtropical technical crops are cultivated in the Ajar Autonomous Republic: tung (the overall area of its plantations amounts to 446 hectares), laurel (360 hectares), bamboo (172 hectares). Persimmon, eucalyptus and myrtle also have industrial importance.

In the agriculture of Ajara, grape growing, tobacco growing, and bee keeping and cattle-breeding play a very important role.

Ajar Autonomous Republic is a transport junction of sea, railway, automotive, and air means of transport of Georgia. The most important is sea transport.

Since 1997, the Batumi trade seaport is a municipal enterprise. The program of the development of the Batumi port up to 2010 has been developed. The result of the realization of this program will be a considerable growth of both overall cargo flow and the nomenclature of the cargoes going through the port. Nowadays the equipment of the port allows work with liquid, general, dry cargoes, and containers.

In 1998, railroad ferryboat communication was opened in the Batumi seaport.

The Batumi ferryboat is of great economical and political significance not only for Georgia itself but also for the countries of the Black Sea basin and the other countries, as it is common knowledge that Georgia is the axis of the transport way connecting Europe and Asia. The nominal power of ferryboat communication is 4 million tons a year. The significance of the Batumi railroad ferryboat communication is also demonstrated by the fact that the transportation of cargoes in this way from the China port of Hong Kong to Rotterdam is reduced by 16-17 days. It will be of great importance for the countries of the Black Sea coast: Turkey, the Ukraine, Russia, Romania and Bulgaria.

On the territory of Ajara (in the city of Batumi) the railway trunk line of Trans-Caucasus region (Baku-Tbilisi-Batumi) ends, to which the railroad Senaki-Sukhumi-Tuapse is connected. This part of the railway trunk-line will become the most important link connecting Europe with Asia, and the North with the countries of the Near East with the help of the Euroasian transport corridor and the realization of the TRASEKA project, especially now, since Batumi railroad ferry-boat communication already exists.

Automobile transportation is of great importance for the Ajar Autonomous Republic because of its mountainous relief. If at the beginning of the 90s there were only two motorways, Batumi-Ahaltsikhe over Goderdzsky heights and Batumi-Kobuleti, then since 1991 special attention has been given to the construction of the roads and bridges in Ajara. 116 bridges of the overall length 2740 meters have been built. Among them the longest one in Georgia is Gonio Bridge (476 m.) and the highest one over the sea level (45 m.) is the bridge «Gidela».

Presently, the overall length of the motorways in Ajara amounts to 1328 km. Among them:
  • of international importance – 49 km.;
  • of interstate importance – 147 km.;
  • of local importance – 1132 km.
The roads are covered with asphalt, goudron, and asphalt-beton.

As everywhere else, aviation transport is used for the transportation of passengers, perishables and mail in Ajara. There are both local flights to Moscow, Kiev, Krasnodar, Krasnoyarsk and to other cities of the Commonwealth of Independent States. Projects of the reconstruction of the existing airport, turning it into a large airport of international importance, are being worked out.
